I Conquered the Fridge!

December 13, 2008

The refrigerator thought it had me beat but it underestimated my ingenuity.  I tore off the drywall on one side of the alcove.  The extra 1/2 inch of space this provided was juuuust enough to allow the fridge room to slide in easily.  It is now perfectly situated in the wall.  The fact that it is such a tight fit worked to our advantage – it gives it a professional “built in” look.

It wasn’t until today that I realized that magnets do not take to stainless steel refigerators.  Very unfortunate.

I made a bit of a mistake.  The alcove for the fridge is slightly too small.  It’s big enough at the front of the alcove – but it narrows as it goes back.  At the rear it is about 1/2 inch too small for the fridge.  This made for a very awkward attempt at stuffing a big fridge into a small space.  We’re going to have to figure out a way to make the alcove 1/2 inch wider at the rear.

This isn't working... it's wedged in there pretty tight!

Light Switches

December 7, 2008

Light switches have been installed.  It’s the little details that make all the difference.

Happy Thanksgiving

We lost the battery chargers for both of our cameras during the move.  Our batteries died a couple of weeks ago so we haven’t been able to take any photos.  We broke down on black Friday and bought a new camera.  Even though this week had the holiday we managed to get a lot done.  Almost all of the drywall is up and most of the taping and mudding is done.  Bob has gotten all of the wiring in and our lights even work – although we have to plug the bare wire into an outlet to make it work.  Light switches next week!

Injured Finger, Work Goes On

November 10, 2008

It’s been a week since I maimed my finger.  I was worried that we wouldn’t be able to get anything done this weekend but we had some surprise help – Michael came by on Sunday.  He and Brian were able to get a TON of work done.  They were able to put up almost all the drywall in the new kitchen/dining room.  My Mom and Dad also came by to help.  On Saturday Bob came by to continue working on the electric.  Dee Dee came with him and got a lot more work done outside.  Her and my Mom are slowly trimming every tree in the backyard.

My poor little finger is doing OK.  I was able to do some work here and there.  Due to popular demand I am putting up a picture of my injury.

TRAGEDY!

November 3, 2008

I was cutting a small piece of wood with the mitre saw and wasn’t being careful.  The wood I was cutting got caught in the machine and the index finger on my left hand got pulled into the blade.  I was in a rush and should never have let my hand get so close to the blade to begin with.  After I sliced my finger up I put a t-shirt on it to stop the bleeding.   As we were leaving the house for the hospital I got lightheaded and fainted on the front porch.  I hit my head pretty hard on the brick when I fell.  My parents called 911 and the paramedics came to make sure I was ok.  It was all very embarassing.  Someone also put a blanket on me so I looked like I was camping on the front porch.  After I was feeling better we went to the hospital and fixed me up.  My finger ended up being ok, although it has a pretty big hole in it and will take a while to heal.

Besides slicing my finger the accident also ruined my glove.

Dumpster switch!  It is amazing how much stuff we are removing from the house.  We filled up a 10yard dumpster (10 cubic yards) with no trouble at all.  We still have a ton of other stuff to get rid of – the basement, living room, and upstairs all still need demolition.  I ordered a 20yard dumpster to be delivered when they get rid of the 10yard.  They just tow it all onto the back of a truck and drive away.
